How to Prepare for Your Treatment
Proper preparation helps ensure your skin is in the best possible condition for your treatment and can support optimal results and recovery. Because every treatment and skin type is different, your provider may give you additional instructions specific to your needs.
Before Any Appointment
Be Mindful of Active Skincare Ingredients
Certain skincare ingredients can increase skin sensitivity and may affect how your skin responds to treatment.
For services like Lasers/Microneedling/Facials/Chemical Peels, please temporarily pause 5 days before treatment:
- Retinol & retinoids: Retinol, retinal, tretinoin, adapalene, and other vitamin A derivatives
- Exfoliating acids: Glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic, and other AHAs/BHAs
- At-home exfoliating treatments: Peel pads, chemical peels, scrubs, exfoliating masks, and resurfacing products
- Benzoyl peroxide and other potentially irritating acne treatments
- Any product that causes redness, peeling, dryness, burning, or increased sensitivity
Please Disclose Your Medications & Skincare
Before your appointment, please let your provider know about all medications, supplements, and skincare products you currently use. Certain medications and active ingredients may affect your skin’s sensitivity, healing, or how it responds to treatment.
Be sure to disclose if you are currently taking or have recently taken medications such as:
- Accutane (isotretinoin)
- Spironolactone
- Prescription or topical acne medications
- Retinoids such as tretinoin or adapalene
- Antibiotics or other medications that may affect your skin
- Any medications or supplements that may increase sensitivity, bruising, or bleeding
General Preparation
- Avoid picking, squeezing, or irritating the treatment area.
- Avoid treatments over areas with active irritation, sunburn, open wounds, or infection.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning before your appointment.
- Inform your provider about current medications, supplements, allergies, skincare products, recent treatments, and any changes in your skin.
- If you are unsure whether a product or treatment should be avoided, contact our team before your appointment.
Aesthetic Injectables
Injectable treatments, including neuromodulators and dermal fillers, require individualized preparation based on your treatment plan and medical history.
Before Your Appointment
- Inform your provider about all medications, supplements, allergies, and previous injectable treatments.
- Follow any medication or supplement instructions provided by your medical provider.
- Do not stop prescribed medications without speaking with your prescribing provider.
- Avoid alcohol before your appointment if instructed by your provider.
- Let your provider know about any upcoming dental procedures, recent facial treatments, active infections, or cold sores.
- Plan ahead if you have an important event coming up, as temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising can occur.
- Arrive with a clean face whenever possible.
Your injector will review your medical history, goals, and treatment plan and provide any additional instructions specific to your procedure.
Not Sure What to Stop?
Skincare routines can contain a lot of active ingredients, and it isn’t always obvious what should be paused before a treatment.
When in doubt, send us a photo of your current skincare products or bring your routine with you to your appointment. Our team can help determine what should be paused and when you can safely resume your products.
Please note: These are general preparation guidelines and do not replace individualized instructions from your provider. Your provider may recommend different preparation based on your skin type, medical history, and treatment plan.
